An exception to the rule

“The Basic Dilemma Of Internet Marketers That You’re Probably Struggling With Also — And What To Do About It” By Marlon Sanders

There’s a basic dilemma all Internet marketers face:

Learn the new methods that get better results

Versus –

Do the basics that you know work.

If you want to make maximum profits, then you need to learn and use the latest methods on the one hand.

On the other hand, if you want to make maximum profits, you have to DO things and FOCUS. You can’t learn everything and do everything.

It’s a classic double bind.

If you spend all your money and time learning new things to get better results, then you don’t have time to DO the things you know work.

At the same time, if you spend all your time DOING, you often miss out on the easy profits created by newer, more state-of-the- art methods.

This puts internet marketers in a real time crunch because a person can’t do both — learn all the new methods hitting the market practically weekly AND also DO what needs to be done to make a profit.

What’s the solution?

I call it breathing. It’s a natural rhythm. You learn. Then you do. You learn. Then you do.

If you get stuck in learning and don’t do, you won’t make the most you can. And vice versa, if you DO but don’t learn, you’ll spin your wheels and quite possibly not succeed.

In my case, I’m devoting this whole entire year to implementing just one new SYSTEM of thinking in my business.

I started on this system one year ago. And I let myself get quickly sidetracked last year. I decided that this year, I want to take the one concept and fully and completely implement it.

I talk to some marketers who just don’t know what they’re doing. They REALLY need to learn more. They need to learn about writing copy, graphics, doing surveys, finding markets and product creation.

On the other hand, there are MANY marketers who HAVE been in this business 3-5 years and know all the basics and some of the advanced stuff.

Yet, they just don’t get products out. They don’t get promos done. They get caught up in the paralysis of analysis and don’t do ANYTHING.

That’s why the natural rhythm of money is to learn and do.

Learn and do. If what you DO doesn’t work, it’s time to LEARN some more. But if you haven’t DONE what you’ve LEARNED, it’s time you focus on DOING for awhile.

A lot of people get stuck on that point because DOING is a pain in the tail end a lot of days. You ALWAYS are going to be afraid of making mistakes. You are ALWAYS going to run into frustrations and things that don’t work right.

It’s ALWAYS going to take longer and be harder than you THOUGHT.

But the people who succeed can tolerate the PAIN OF ACTION. It’s easy to sit back and learn. I love it. But DOING means you run into obstacles and things that don’t work right.

It means you’re confronted with the details of learning programs. It means you’ll screw up and make mistakes. Worse than that, it means you’ll DO things that don’t work!

For every 1 thing that WORKS, you’ll likely try TEN that don’t. And I don’t care WHO you are. If someone denies that, they either don’t have much experience, they’re lying or they aren’t honest with themselves.

I remember discussing this whole topic with Cory Rudl in times past. I would think I was the only one who had such and so thing not work right. I’d talk to Cory and find out that he’d had the same exact issues.

It made me feel a little better that I wasn’t the only one in the world who had things that didn’t work as I anticipated.

I hope this article gives you a little more clarity on the fundamental dilemma of Internet marketers and puts you on the path to greater profits.

Are you wasting valuable real estate in your list building?

Sunday, September 17th, 2006

Think about all the pages you use in your marketing system. Now I usually make sure I use them all. At least I try to ;-). A review last week showed me some gaping holes I had left open by hurrying.

It wasn’t that I did not know better. We are all busy and sometimes too busy trying to get this and that done. We sometimes just overlook the obvious.

For an example - I have been setting up some email follow up series on a few Clickbank products from a membership site I belong to. Now I receive the emails as part of the package so it is quite quick to set up. Sometimes, because it is easy we forget to do the whole job. If I had been creating them I would have been thinking about the pages that needed to be set up.

Instead, because it was “easy” I was more worried about trying to get them up and running, get the Adwords campaign working properly, test various ads and keywords and track the conversions.

What I didn’t do in my hurry is to set up the little things. I found that all those subscribers were going to the default page from my autoresponder when they clicked submit. To make it worse I was paying to get them and not taking every advantage of getting a return on my money. Boo hiss on the Old Bald Guy.

Yep, I copied and pasted the emails in but I forgot to take the time to create a custom page to explain that they would have to verify their email to receive the series they signed up for. More importantly, because it wasn’t my page I couldn’t have a little ad to pick up an extra sale or two every so often.

This is one of the easiest ways I know to add a sale if you match the product with the offer in your email series. Normally, this is a no brainer for me. But we all know the old saying - haste makes waste.

I have a variety of Resell Rights Products that I can usually match something to the topic of the email series. I prefer it to be a relatively inexpensive product that people will buy on the spur of the moment. Even $5-10 products add up if you are driving traffic to build your list.

The other thing is that I did not set any of these series up to show my co-registration page. Dumb, dumb, dumb. Having my co-registration page show once people verify their email address has normally added an additional 20-30% of any list I have been building.

Well, I quickly realized that my haste was costing me big time. I started fixing these little leaks. The first week it made me enough extra money to be able to order extra co-registration credits and get more subscribers without coming out of my pocket. Of course I do make sure that all those co-registrations will also get a chance to make an impulse buy ;-).

If you are building your list (and you should be), make sure you are not overlooking these little holes in your marketing plan. You will be surprised at what a difference it can make in your bottom line.

5 Steps To Get Your Business Started

Tuesday, September 12th, 2006

One of the biggest problems most newer marketers online have is defining their business. I might even be able to retire if I had a $1 for every person I have heard when asked what their business is answers “I just want to make money.”

Now that is probably something that we all want to do but the question is how? Have you decided on an actual business model to generate that money you want?

Business is business whether based on line of off line. You have to have a plan and a goal.

You have to avoid the information overload.

Below are 5 steps to take to get your business started.

  • Define your business.
  • Plan out the ways to implement your business.
  • Break that plan into small pieces.
  • Put the blinders on once you have decided how you are going to build your business.
  • Set a time frame to review and adapt.

Define your business

Decide what you are going to do online. There are lots of choices. Affiliate marketing, Adsense, your own product, etc.

Plan out the ways to implement your business.

If you are going to do Adsense figure out how you are going to put up the sites, etc. Affiliate marketing - decide what types of products and how you are going to promote them.

Break the plan into small pieces

I’ll use the Adsense example. You need to get a Google account, be able to get pages on line, optimize them for search engines, build back links, etc.

Put the blinders on

If you decided on Adsense in our example you will not look at all the distractions. You will spend your time building sites, getting the links, optimizing your pages, etc. You won’t get sidetracked into all the other things that look like just can’t miss prospects.

Set a time frame to review and adapt

Do a review of what you have accomplished. It can be monthly, quarterly or whatever works for you. Use this to decide what you are doing well and what is not working. It is okay to change and adapt if you find you need to. Just make sure that it is based on what you are doing and not chasing the latest and greatest money making scheme.

Follow these 5 steps and you will be surprised at how fast your business can come together.

3 Tips to Start Your Follow Up Series

Monday, September 4th, 2006

Quite often I get asked “How do I get started with my first autoresponder?” It is probably the one thing that keeps people from starting to build their sales system. It really is not hard if you split it apart. Plan the system and the email series will almost write themselves.

The first thing is to decide on the purpose of your series.

  • You are trying to drive traffic back to your sales page from your squeeze page on your product
  • You are trying to warm up and create the relationship with new members of your list or ezine
  • You are providing a tutorial on using your membership site
  • And there are probably as many other purposes as your mind can create

Second you want to make sure that you provide what you used as a hook for the sign up.

  • Send the download link for the video
  • Send the download link for the pdf or special report
  • Provide the e-course

Third determine what products you want to promote. Make sure that they match what you have used as an offer to join your list. This is probably the most important thing.

The worst thing you can do is to offer things (even in a signature ad) that have nothing to do with the topic that interested your subscriber to subscribe.

If you want me to unsubscribe quickly, offer me items that are about marketing when I signed up to a desserts newsletter. Now, offering custom cake pans, baking stones, recipe books, etc. would fit right in with your topic. Offering me an autoresponder service would not.

The important thing is to let people know you and start to develop a trust with you. Do that and you no longer sell things but recommend things. Your pocket book will love the difference.

Are you ready for the fall season?

Saturday, August 19th, 2006

The dog days of summer are almost done.  Soon everybody will stop complaining about how slow things have been.  Business will pick up with the arrival of Labor Day in the U.S.  Are you ready?

Have you taken the time to set up all the little things that will mean the difference between success and failure once September arrives?

Have you gotten the basics for your funnel set up?

The funnel is a simple thing that successful marketers embrace and unsuccessful marketers ignore.  You need a low cost way to bring in people to your circle of influence.  There you can build the relationship. Then and only then are you likely to sell your higher cost (bigger profit) items.

Take the time to write out how your funnel will be set up for the fall.

Decide what you are going to use at all points in your funnel.

Below are 3 things that you should have in place before the weather turns.

Set up your autoresponder and tweak them to help you bring people through the funnel that you have set up. Check that all the links in the email series are working.  Test, test and test some more.

Pick out the products that you want to promote.  Set up a full sales process for them while you have the time. Create the special report that you will use for a lead in.  Create your squeeze page to give away your special report. Have the autoresponder loaded for follow up.

Set up your split testing process for your squeeze pages.  Find out which one works best. Keep testing it to improve it.

Set the process up now while you have the time.Take advantage of this time and profit from it when the tide turns.  You will be ready and will leverage your efforts now many times over.

Can you really buy subscribers for a profit?

Saturday, August 12th, 2006

Sounds like an oxymoron doesn’t it?  Buy subscribers and profit in the same sentence.  After all if you spend money how can you profit?

It depends on how you have set up your sales system.

If you have built an email series that converts subscribers into a few sales then you know what you can spend to fill the top of the funnel.

Setting up this kind of system can allow you to rapidly increase the size of your list with almost no effort once you have set things up.

Here is how it can work for you.

Spend a few dollars on some co-registrations and add them into the series that you have set up. As they go through the system you will have one or two that will buy something.  If those purchases make your more money than you spent for the initial influx of subscribers you have now actually made money by buying subscribers.

Now I tend to buy co-registrations from Advertising Know How and with my system I have proven that if I buy $40 of credits I average about 75 subscribers that actually verify and stick in my system.

That makes my average cost per subscriber about $0.53.

The thing is that by the time these 75 subscribers have completed the series I have usually netted $52.75 on average or about $0.70 per subscriber.  It means that on average I make $0.17 for each subscriber that I buy.

Now do I make exactly $52.75 or get exactly 75 subscribers. NO!

But the thing is that sometimes I only make $25 and get 62 subscribers and other times I make $93.00 and get 104 subscribers. That is both ends of the spectrum for me.

Over the course of the last 6 months the average numbers are what has happened.  I track everything and that allows me to  know that I can spend a few dollars, add subscribers for no effort and usually turn a profit within a few weeks.  This allows me to reinvest that money in more new subscribers and start the process all over again.

That doesn’t take into account any future money these subscribers will earn me in the future.

The key is to track and tweak your email series until you can make it pay.  Then just keep filling the top of the funnel.

Are you ready to roll with the punches?

Are you preparing for the unexpected?

It always seems to happen at the worst possible time. I just sent out a free gift to my subscribers and an hour or so later the network center where my server is hosted goes down due to a power outage.

Hmmm. Whodathunkit? It never ceases to amaze me what Mr. Murphy can do to your business. If you don’t take Mr. Murphy and his law into account when you are doing the strategic planning of your business you better start.

Now lets look at just three things that can and do go wrong with an online business.

  • Your computer just dies. Yep machines do that all the time often without any notice.
  • Your server dies. A server is nothing more than a computer that is hooked to the infrastructure of the web.
  • Your isp quits working.

Let’s address ways that you can plan for these things.

  • Always have a full back up of your computer preferably done daily. If you are serious about your business having a mirror computer is a good thing. I have a lap top that has everything that is on my desktop. One of the things I am lax on is updating them daily but at least once a week they get synched.
  • Now you can mirror your server on a different host and that is something I am looking at but the easy things that you can do is have backups. If you have a good host they are backing things up also but I never depend on them for that. Every site I own can be wiped clean but each and every one can be put back off of my desk top. The only exception would be the ones using data bases as I only download those weekly. In a worst case scenario only 5-6 days maximum of activity would be lost.
  • Having more than one ISP is mandatory in my opinion. A cheap dial up account can be a life saver if something would ever happen with my cable connection. Wouldn’t be nice to deal with but would at the very least allow me to stay in business.

There are lots of other things that can and will go wrong in your business and taking a bit of time to have alternative plans in place before hand can mean the difference between a minor annoyance and a major catastrophe.

Take the time to at least think about the various things that can go wrong and start to make alternative plans now.

Something different

Thursday, July 27th, 2006

This has nothing to do with marketing or list building but was a neat site I found and enjoyed.

Every once in a while you find a neat little site while surfing the web.Now I am not left handed but have a daughter and step son that are.  I have seen the aggravation they go through when trying to be a southpaw in a right handed world.I can remember the temper tantrum I suffered through when my daughter was young and we were shopping for a ball glove so she could play softball.  There we are standing in the store and she saw the glove of her dreams.  Unfortunately, it was only available in a right handed model.

  • A quick aside- My daughter is a Taurus and a full blown one at that,  She was also only about 8 years old at this time. (Fortunately for me she is now all grown up and her husband gets to deal with her stubbornness not me.)

The argument, crying, stamping of feet that ensued was something to see.  (Of course there wasn’t much humor in it if your were the focal point of it.;-)).  Finally, I just decided that this would be a task for another day as I had lost all of my patience quite quickly and we left.

It wasn’t the first time and surely wasn’t the last.

The point is that if you are a southpaw or have a child that is you will have problems with this all too often.  It doesn’t matter whether it is scissors or a serrated knife (Just try cutting something straight with the bevel on the wrong side.)– finding left handed items can be a real chore.

That is what attracted me to this site, Anything Left Handed.

Not only do they have a huge variety of items for lefties they also have a wide variety of articles including some neat surveys and the response to do you have problems kissing was quite entertaining.

If you are left handed or have a loved one who is take the time to check out the site.  You can find the articles under the LH Info tab at the top.

Even though this wasn’t about list building or marketing I hope you looked at the site and realize you can build a business around any topic.  Too many people try to compete in the very tiny area of selling to other marketers.  Take the time to expand your horizons and take the techniques and apply them to an area you love.

3 ways to use your product to build your list

Saturday, July 22nd, 2006

It you are promoting your own product, and you should be, or at the very least planning your first, here are 3 ways to leverage that for building your list.

1. Use a squeeze page on your sales letter.

There are a variety of reasons other than list building to be doing this. It is always a good idea to capture people’s information for proper follow up. Even if I looked at your letter and was thinking of buying it the odds are I won’t return. If you are sending a follow up series then I may come back on the second, third or fourth follow up. The more often I come back the greater your chance of generating a sale.

You will also have a list of people interested in a specific topic. Find a complimentary product and let them know about it. Again, another chance to fatten your bottom line.

2. Offer free updates within your product.

Customers on your list are your ideal future customers. They know you and like what you offer. Gathering there information with a promise to update them with future upgrades is an easy lay up. These are your perfect market for the next product you bring out with in your niche.

3. Use your product in jv giveaways.

Having a product to give away in these joint ventures is a great way to add subscribers. The way this works is you offer your product for free or for a very low price in exchange for someone signing up for your list.

This works in a few ways. First, if you are using the second item in this list of three you get someone who has first hand experience with your product. Second, a satisfied user is your ideal customer for your next offering.

Make sure that you are using these three tips if you have your own product. If you don’t have your own product, get started on it today.

Top Ways To Create Ideas For Your Next Highly Read Article

Sunday, July 9th, 2006

by Mike Paetzold

If you want to make money online a good strategy that doesn’t cost you a dime is to write articles in the field that relates to your product or service.

Search Engines are constantly on the look out for fresh content and writing and submitting articles online is a great way to do that.

So how do you come up with ideas for your next article? Here a few ideas that will help you do that.

  • Hang out in online forums. Watch what people are talking about. Look at the questions they are asking. The topics that are bringing the greatest number of visitors would make for an excellent article.

  • Take a look at what information is being broadcast on TV, radio, newspapers, and online. This information is usually a hot topic.

  • Read blogs. What are people posting about? What kind of comments are they leaving? What questions do they have? Blogs are the hot internet marketing medium right now and you can literally find them everywhere on any topic. This is an excellent source for your next article idea.

  • Survey your current customers or website visitors. Ask them what kind of article they would like to see in your next ezine or published on your website.

  • Check bookstores online. What are the top sellers. This can be a good way to come up with an article that catches the attention of what people are reading.

  • Be seasonal. Write about what is going on that time of year. Holidays, festivals, sports, graduations, etc. all make for an article that someone will want to read.

  • Write an article about a current fad. There is always something that is hot at the time and could make for interesting reading from you.

  • Keep track of what your customers and prospects are asking you. If you get an email or phone call with a question this may make for a good article. Others may have the same question, but are afraid to ask it.

  • Start a swipe file on what others are writing about. If it is of interest to you it will probably be of interest to others. Never plagiarize the work of others, but you can certainly get good ideas this way. The biggest benefit of a swipe file is having it handy to refer back to over and over whenever you are ready to write your article and are not sure what you want to write about.

Hopefully this will give you some ideas on how to come up with your next article. The internet marketer who can write interesting articles has a huge leg up on their competition. If you can master this strategy there is no limit to how much money you can make online.
