I know the first couple of giveaways that I got involved in, I did exactly that, downloaded 5-10-15 products just because they looked interesting and I thought I could use them at some point in time...flash forward--I think a lot of those products are still sitting on my computer gathering cyber dust...AND I am still subscribed to the lists that I needed to opt in to to download...but there is a reason for that. One of the niches that I market in, I use the emails that I receive from others for inspiration for the emails that I send out!! As for newbies, yes, it is a better idea to know what you are looking for before you start clicking on download buttons and get totally confused before you even start making some cash.
