4 Things To Understand When Starting Your Business

  • Sharebar

Started to do a bit of planning on how to incorporate the survey results here to help you the most. As I sat working in Free Mind a simple question occurred to me. What business model do I base the series on?

Seems to be a simple question but it really isn’t and it is probably the biggest reason that people fail and get information overload – too many choices. I now use a few different ones but to start you need one and you need to get good at the one.

The problem is that there are so many and if people focus on one they can eventually get it to work. What happens though is that most just try one and when it does not work immediately they see 4 more opportunities in their email box and go for the new shiny object.

Let me ask you a question now. When you were a kid and learning to ride a bike did you get on the bike the first time and go speeding off?

Or were you like me and you rode with training wheels for a bit to get the feel for it? Then your Dad took the training wheels off and you immediately crashed because you just knew you could do it. I did. I crashed a second and a third and a fourth time too. I was really getting pissed because my friend could ride and made it look easy. I mean after all how hard could it be if he could do it?

Finally I allowed my Dad to help steady me and once I got to speed he let go and it actually worked even after he let go until I realized that I was actually riding on my own when I promptly crashed.

Soon after that though it just became part of me. I got on the bike and took off riding with no problem. Once I did that it was easy and even today, 50 years later, I can get on a bike and just go because I know how to ride. I had made all the mistakes and learned from each one not to make the same one again.

The point is that first I had to decide you wanted to ride the bike. That desire had to be sufficient that I would keep trying after you crashed and scraped your leg. I even needed to swallow my pride and let my Dad help me (not an easy thing for a stubborn 5 year old). In my case it was that my best friend could do it and made it look easy.

You will have times when you get frustrated and just want to walk away from the bike or your business.

So I guess the point of all of this rambling is 4 fold.

  1. You need to pick one business model and get good at it. Yes you can add other things later but to start you need to have just one that becomes as easy as riding a bike is once you master it.
  2. You need the desire to stay the path and get up when you get knocked down because you will get knocked down.
  3. You need to learn from your mistakes and adapt.
  4. Find someone to help you along the way and steady you until you get started.

    Great post Mike!

Four very basic points to be successful.

Actually I like the bike portion most. Being Dutch I always thought bike riding came together with birth. So now I’m not sure if I was too young to remember it or if I’m now too old to remember it…..

Great analogy Mike. I don’t really remember when I was young trying to learn to ride my bike, but I can only “assume” that I crashed a few times (or maybe that’s why I can’t remember it :) .

There have been several projects that I have worked on online that havn’t been as successful as I had hoped. But just like a bike, you have to get back up and try again.

You are so right about this subject. There are times when it can get really frustrating and you want to give up. You see others around you that are doing it and making it look easy. You have to learn that some learn quicker than others. And what is to say that you end up doing it better. Almost like riding your bike with no hands. Oops, I fell again.

Great post with one of the best analogies I’ve seen, Mike!

The online business equivalent to your Dad’s steadying hands is a mentor or coach – something you’d be very qualified to offer, Mike…

One addition to the analogy for those shooting for the big leagues – my first bike was way too big for me, and my Dad added blocks to the pedals til I was big enough to use the bike without them. But as a result, I was on the path to riding an adult-sized bike long before my friends.

In Internet marketing, that same help getting to the ‘big leagues’ comes from networking and, most importantly, from mastermind groups. Pooling efforts with others of approximately the same size in online biz is the fast-track to bigger successes – as long as listening to your mentor and being active in your mastermind group becomes a habit, not a chore.

I see you use free mind too. I’ve had some luck with it, but it gets funky every once in a while. Still a great way to put a lot of ideas in one place and sort them out. As to your main point, I’m guilty of being a multi-tasker, and try to have multiple projects going at all times. I don’t recommend it. I’ve been trying to focus for some time now, but find that a lot easier to say than do. Right now I have a major project and a handful of minor things I am doing each day on blogs, affiliate marketing etc. Plus a bit of a backup plan should my major project not take off next week as hoped. I don’t dispute your thoughts here, just find my style it to do multiple things. I am getting better at many at the same time. Now it might go faster if I was doing just one. But then I would need to put all my eggs in one basket. And there’s a story about that too.
