PLR, MRR, RR is it just alphabet soup?
Something came to light in talking with people this week and it made me step back for a minute and think. A scary thought for you I am sure this old bald guy actually thinking first. Surprised me too.
Well what I realized is that I have been doing this online thing for quite a while and the lingo has become second nature to me. It causes me to use that very bad word (no its not a four letter one like WORK although a lot of people fear that one
) but it is very easy to assume things.
Now I am not sure if you have seen it split apart but what they say about it is true – ass/u/me.
That is why I wanted to start and get back to more basics here on occasion. Today it is alphabet soup time and I will break down three that are commonly used in various ways – PLR, MRR and RR.
Now to me those are perfectly clear and I know exactly what the difference is and sometimes just use them and don’t explain them. If you are totally befuddled then you need to keep reading I do have a point to this dribble.
PLR
Stands for private label rights. Now this can be applied to numerous things like articles, ebooks, videos and audios.
What it means -
Private label rights allows you to reuse that content as your own. You can publish the article or ebook with you as the author, you can edit it and reuse it in just about any way that you want. I have taken PLR books and used them as articles or blog posts. Created a new product out of them and sold it as mine.
**Caveat – One of the problems with all three of these terms is that they may be used but you ALWAYS need to read the license you get with these for any restrictions.
Here is an example of a license I received.

As you can see there are restrictions. I can do pretty much anything except give away PLR rights or claim copyright of the product. I can rename it, change things around and add myself as author.
PLR is valuable because you can add your own links and back end into the product then sell or give it away as your own.
MRR
Stands for Master Resell Rights – Unlike PLR you can’t change the product but you can resell it and keep all the money. You can also pass on the rights to resell the product.
Now again you need to check the license because some times there are restrictions. You may or may not be able to sell the MRR to others. So purchasers from you may only be able to sell the product but can not pass on resell rights to others.
There may also be other restrictions so you always need to read and follow the license that you get for the product.
RR
RR stands for resell rights. This is the most restrictive in that you can sell the product as your own but can not pass on resell rights to others. You may or may not be able to give away the product, add it as a bonus, etc. so always check the license that comes with the product.
All of these different types of rights can be helpful in adding to your portfolio of products you can sell and keep the money. PLR is the most flexible for you to use but usually requires you to put in some effort to make it your own.
Usually resell rights or master resell rights are quite easy to turn around and set up but you will be competing with others because you can’t make yours unique to you like you can with PLR products.
Hopefully I have removed some of the assume we as marketers sometimes get caught in when using this alphabet soup mix for you with this article so we both benefit.
Let me know by commenting how well or how poorly I did.

Thank you for clarifying those terms Mike. It’s easy to assume that everyone knows what we are talking about, but people who are just starting out online have no idea about these terms.
Like you said though, everyone needs to be careful to read the Terms they get, as each can be slightly different for each product.

That is always something that I think gets people really confused. And I would include myself in that group. With so many ways you can use this stuff it makes it easier to know what you can do. I for one will be pasting this next to my computer to help me. Thanks.

Good post Mike. It’s always good to go back tot he basics, and to keep in mind that not everyone you are emailing knows everything your do. That’s why they are reading in the first place. The key point is to pay attention to the licenses. I would have gone a step further and strongly suggest that they always keep the license file with the product because its easy to forget just what rights you have with a product after time.

It’s always important to return to the basic information from time to time, as so many of our readers are newbies at any one time. You’ve made it much clearer for them with this post, and it should help them avoid problems over what they can and can’t do with the products they buy online – well done, Mike!

That’s interesting- I never thought much about MRR. It’s good to know exactly what it is.

It’s amazing how soon we ‘forget’ that there may be new comers reading our posts and we just throw out the acronyms thinking that everyone reading will understand what they mean.
Thanks for the wake up call Mike!
