Are you getting good at something?

  • Sharebar

Today I wanted to discuss something that is probably one of the biggest killers of new people and some older people in getting your business going. It came to me during a 3 hour call Willie Crawford and Doug Champigny did last night on 14 ways to generate traffic.

Aside – The call was great and if you did not attend you should go pay for the replay and transcript which will be available next week. Sign up here and you can get it at $20 savings before the 9th.

They were discussing 14 different ways to get targeted traffic to your sites. The thing is some of the ways they both used and some of the ways only one used extensively.

The key was to get good at a specific way and understand how to use it in a time efficient manner. Then track the results so you know what your return is on your effort.

Too often we try to do all 14 things at once. We end up doing none of them well and have absolutely no idea what worked and what didn’t. (Notice the use of we I have definitely been guilty of this.) All too often nothing works because none of the many things were done properly.

Here is an example. If you want to use Twitter to drive traffic you need to understand a few things.

  1. How to get targeted followers
  2. What tools to use (most are free)
  3. How to track your results
  4. How to manage your time effectively.

See Twitter can be addictive and become a huge time drain. Manage your time and know your results and you can realistically decide if it is worth your effort once you are using it properly. Just go out and do an occasional tweet and then be sucked in to the socializing and it can be a business killer. (To better use Twitter check out Advanced Twitter Marketing – gets two thumbs up from me.)

Willie talked about article marketing and how a single article could make thousands of dollars but most don’t and you need to be doing more than just a few to get that kind of response.

Like blogging it is the sum total of what you are doing that will make it powerful and work the best for you. Just doing one article and deciding if it is worthwhile will rarely work for you.

The point is that YOU need to get good at one thing at a time. Focus in on it and tweak it then and only then add a new item. Test and track all of them and as you keep adding more ways for traffic put your time and effort where you get the best return. Each person’s business will be different.

All of the 14 ways covered in last night’s call work and can help your business but only if you take the time to get good at them one at a time. The same applies to all aspects of your business.

Go sign up and grab the discount on the call and transcript while you can then start applying them one at a time to grow your business.

I’ve learned that just recently. It’s very easy to try something new hoping for better results without giving the first tactic a good chance. I’m with you, learn and apply, track then try the other traffic generating tips. It’s sometimes difficult because we want and expect instant results in this business.

Then it’s a matter as you say to manage your time wisely

Mike it was indeed a good call. I think the key now is to do as you suggest and get good a one of the traffic methods. I’ve been working with Advanced Twitter Marketing. It is working. Will start working on some of the other methods also.
It would be tempting to try to start doing all of them. But I know that to focus on a few is far better, then con work on the others. I am sure I will be listen to the call several times as I try to work on the traffic tips that Doug and Willie covered.

I enjoyed the call as well, and fully agree with you in general. You can’t do it all, but I think you can do two or three at a time. I am doing some article marketing, blogging and twittering. They each need a portion of time and I do need to watch what I am doing since I tend to get distracted. But I have to agree with the main thrust of your comment. Focus and working to completion are biggies.

I think you misunderstood. I do quite a few of the ways but I got good and focused on one at a time. Tracked it and tweaked it then added the next then the next. You can do more than one and you should but you need to focus on adding one at a time and not any others until you get the first one.

Great post, Mike! Thanks to you and your readers for the kind words about the call Willie & I did – think I’m still recovering from it! ;)

Your post brings up another important key to advanced traffic generation – it’s important to know as many ways to drive traffic as possible, but also to be discerning in which methods you use on each service, product or affiliate promotion. For example, article marketing works great long-term – but doesn’t help promote a 3-day sale. Twitter works great – but only those days you actually tweet the link. It’s the synergy of various tactics that builds successful traffic strategies, and focusing on one at a time as you learn them is the ONLY way to truly succeed long-term, as you pointed out.

I agree Mike, it was truly a great call!

I am guilty of starting on too many things at one time and never actually excelling in any one of them but I caught the same portion of the conversation that you did and it sent off the big proverbial light bulb above my head!

It’s not that I didn’t already know that, but to hear it from the likes of Willie and Doug I think it may have finally sunk into my thick skull.

I am looking forward to getting the audio and transcripts so I can dig into this a little more deeply and focus on one thing at a time, track it, make notes of it in the transcripts, and find out which ones I am good at over time. Then I can work specifically on those and eventually I can work that much harder on the ones I had difficulty with until I can become good at those as well.
